A Kansas Water Atlas
1 A Kansas Water Atlas
Topeka The Kansas Water Resources Board 1967 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine No Dust Jacket Arthur McCash
57 pages, saddle stapled. Featuring nine+, thinly veiled oedipal erotic drawings by McCash. Although not verified, popular lore around Topeka is that this publication was almost immediately recalled after printing due to the nature of some of its illustrations. This is an exceptionally nice and bright copy that shows only a hint of bumping at corners.

Prayer Book / New Testament writings in Ge'ez
3 Prayer Book / New Testament writings in Ge'ez
Full Leather Fair No Dust Jacket
No date, though circa mid-late 18th century. 144 leaves (288 pages) on velum leaves, bound in leather. Sinew tied. Mostly black lettering, though with some in red. One full page illustration in color of Madonna and Child. There are a few decorative breaks between sections of text. Written in Ge'ez, an ancient South Semitic language originating in Eritrea and the northern region of Ethiopia. Once the official language of Aksum and Ethiopia, it now remains primarily used in the liturgy of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and to a lesser degree by the Beta Israel Jewish Community (Wikipedi, 2017). Bottom cover is lacking, though all contents appear present. The first leaf is heavily rubbed and mostly illegible. Remaining contents show age, a little rubbing, and scattered markings, though are clear and legible. Estimated to be mid to late 18th century based upon examination of other volumes determined or known to be of this period. Volume is now housed in a leather carrying bag likely reminiscent of its original, though likely made in the mid to late 20th century.

15 Franck, Sebastian Teutscher Nation Chronic alt und new Vorbilde. Des gantzen teutschenn Landes und Volcker [Voelcker], anfenglich herkomen [herkommen], Grentze und Gelegenheit der Reiche, Furstenthumb, Bisthumb, Stett und Herschafften...
Frankfurt Egenholff 1539 Vellum Good+ No Dust Jacket Folio
32 nonpaginated pages, followed by 402 leaves numbered in the upper right recto corner (804 pages). Title page with 2/3 of page illustrated. There are 71 small circular portrait illustrations, most appearing as emperors and within the first 100 leafs. Leaves I, VIII, and XIIII all show small illustrations (quarter to sixteenth page). Leaves measure approx. 29 x 19 cm (11 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). Bound in full vellum with raised spine bands and extensive tooling showing scenes and portraits assumed to be significant to the content. Engraved brass clasps are intact, albeit a bit tarnished. Vellum is rubbed and scuffed, and shows a little chipping and wear along edges. A small section near the center of the bottom cover shows a near circular crack, though there is no loosening of any part. There is slight residue in the upper two compartments on the spine, suggesting previous stickers have been removed, thought residue is very minimal. There are no other signs of institutional markings. The title page is very slightly soiled and shows a few chips along its fore edge. Light moisture tide marks can be seen on the first three leaves following the title page. Occasional light penciled marks and marginalia. This volume remains tight and generally clean. The pages are crisp, bright, and otherwise intact. Sebastian Franck (1499 - ca. 1542) could perhaps be best described as a theologian seeking his theology. Born into the Roman Catholic Church and being named a curate in the Dioceses of Augsburg at the age of 17, he was also an acquaintance of Reformer, Martin Bucer of Heidelberg. In 1525 he joined with the Lutherans at Nurnberg, becoming a preacher for the Reformation. Nevertheless, he soon was disillusioned with their ideology, and found himself moving toward the Anabaptists before denouncing them as dogmatic and narrow. In 1529 he moved to Strasbourg, which was then the center of the Protestant spiritual movement. Here, it appears that his belief turned inward reflecting a mystical Christian ideology based upon inner illumination of the spirit. He identified the Bible as being full of contradictions and being a sort of puzzle or maze that could only reveal itself though the inner spirit. The only doctrines of the Bible necessary for man in their literal meaning would be found in the Ten Commandments and the Apostle's Creed. In Strasbourg, Franck was eventually jailed for his beliefs before being expelled from the city in about 1532. In 1533 he settled in Ulm. However, ongoing conflicts with the Lutherans pushed him from that city in 1539. From there, he seems to have settled in Basel where he likely lived at the time of his death in the winter of 1542-1543. His criticism of the church and organized religion outlined in his writings and "chronicles" drew the ire of Martin Frecht and Martin Luther, the later who dismissed him as speaking the devils tongue. He was banned and even jailed because of his religious views, and his writings were criticized and outlawed in parts of Germany. The current work expands on, and is likely less inhibited, than his earlier 1538 "Germaniae Chronicon" which had resulted in his expulsion from Ulm. Rare in this edition, with WorldCat showing only two copies, and no copies seen at auction over the previous 50+ years.

Sonderdruck Sigmund Freud [offprint from L. R. Grotes'
16 Freud, Sigmund Sonderdruck Sigmund Freud [offprint from L. R. Grotes' "Die Medizin Der Gegenwart in Selbstdarstellungen")
Leipzig Felix Meiner 1925 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good No Dust Jacket Association copy, inscribed by the Author
First edition off-print of Sigmund Freud's autobiography, inscribed on the top cover, "Seimen lieben / O. Pfister / Freud / 12.2.25." The book is further inscribed by Pfister on the blank recto of the frontispiece, " Seimen lieben Freunde / Prof. R. Brandt / In herzlicher Gesinnung / Zurich 24.4.55." Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. Oskar Pfister (1873-1956) was a Swiss Lutheran minister and lay psychoanalyst born in Zurich, Switzerland. He is perhaps best known for applying psychoanalysis to the science of education, as well as a belief system combining psychoanalytic psychology and theology. In Zurich, he was in close intellectual proximity to Eugen Bleuler and Carl Jung. The friendship between Freud and Pfister is well documented, lasting over 30 years and only ending upon Freud's death. Less is known about Professor Brandt, though he is believed to have completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Ottawa, Canada and to have written several articles pertaining to Sigmund Freud as well as the psychoanalytic concept of transference. (We are interested to learn more of Dr. Brandt should anyone have additional information). This offprint is bound in teal paper wrap covers. There are a few penciled marks in the margins, as well as some notations believed to be in German in the blank spaces of the last page. There are some handling creases scattered throughout. Overall, this offprint remains tight, and it is otherwise clean and intact. The offprint is housed in a custom felt-lined clamshell case with leather spine and spine labels, raised spine bands, and gilt lettering. The offprint cover is nicely copied onto a green cloth affixed to the top of the case. This cloth piece shows light rubbing, not affecting any letter. Case is otherwise Fine.

Nurnberg Gedruckt Auf Kosten Der Herausgeber First German Cloth - Hard Cover Very Good+ No Jacket Crown Folio John Gould, Johann Strum, Others
Issued in four parts from 1841 to 1847, and preceded by a prospectus. 36 hand colored lithographs after Gould and Sturm, and two black and white plate after G. Scharf, and A. Koppel. This set has been professionally restored and rebound, mid-20th century. All text leaves have been bleached and cleaned. Text and plate leaves have been trimmed to approx. 12 1/2 x 9 inches. Each part has been separately hardbound with green cloth over spines, and light tan paper over boards. The original covers have been trimmed to approx. 11 x 8 inches and affixed to new covers. The two page prospectus by both Sturms is dated 1840 and bound into the first part. The prospectus cover is affixed to a custom, cloth covered, slipcase that houses all four parts. Original paper covers show some light penciled marks on the prospectus cover and Part I cover. All of the original covers show some wear, though original lettering and boarder decoration remain good. Later bindings remain Fine. Lower outside corner of prospectus page shows a 1 x 2 inch replacement of lost paper, not affecting any of the text. Text leaves are bright and very clean, showing only occasional light and small foxing. Plate sheets are just a little age toned and show light offsetting and occasional foxing. Images remain very bright and clean. Zimmer (1926, page 256) states: "...Pts. I-III contained 10 plates and 10 leaves of text, each; Pt. IV contained 6 colored plates and the accompanying text, and a translation of Owen's article on the anatomy of the toucan with its plate, to which is added a second plate and further remarks by Rudolf Wagner. The principal part of the general text is based on Gould's Monograph of the Ramphastidae," 1833-35 (q.v.), of which it is, in places, a literal translation; but considerable of the matter is rewritten or revised and there are additional species described herein for the first time. The plates are sometimes redrawn and reduced from Gould, but frequently altered or designed afresh, while the illustrations of the new species are entirely new. There is no title page, since the work was never carried to completion..."
