Interesting presentation inscription to Arthur John Butler (English scholar and mountaineer) from his friend Cecil Egerton Green, upon the occasion of Butler's leaving Eton College in 1863. Covers show light general edge wear. Spine covers are darkened and show a few scuffs. Light scattered foxing.

Leather spine cover shows raised spine bands and tooled decorations in compartments. Each volume with two red leather spine labels and gilt stamped lettering. Housed in slipcase with green floral decoration. Slip case and covers are nearly fine with only slight signs of shelf wear. Frontis map in Volume One shows an eight inch closed tear with older archival taped repair. Scattered, mostly light, foxing throughout that is a little heavier on first few leaves and affecting the frontis maps of both volumes. Otherwise intact.

Top hinge (internal) is broke. Color "facsimile autograph map..." shows closed tears along folds. Inked notations in upper margins on last page. Scattered light foxing and age toning. Volume remains fairly tight and is otherwise intact.
