Later Landon book plate, with image of the "Topeka White House" and Landon on horse back in front. Corners lightly bumped. Spine covers are just a little darkened. Light smudge on spine and bottom cover. Volume remains tight and is otherwise clean.

870 pages. Full page author's inscription on blank front free end page reads in part: "To Alf M. Landon / on whose train I had / the privilege to ride / in 1936..." dated 11, November 1976 and includes acknowledgement of using parts of a Landon speech. Volume shows general very light usage. Dust jacket shows a little rubbing and very slight wear, though is overall bright and clean and now protected in a clear mylar sleeve.

Unbound Good Manuscript 
Approximately eight pages, typed, though several are cut and pasted to make four sheets; Typed draft, with many hand written corrections, for 12/11/35 "Today" syndicated column boxhead titled "Visit to Governor Landon. A Direct, Able Man. You Would Like Him. Presenting Nancy Jo." ; Draft was typed and corrected in the offices of The Topeka State Journal, and there is included an eight by ten photograph of Brisbane at the typewriter; Also included is a newspaper clipping of the published column, as well as file photo copies of all the above; General light wear, though overall clear and intact; Although addressing politics of the day and introducing the Landons to America in preparation for his 1936 presidential bid, there is also much about the very outgoing and sociable three year old Nancy Jo (Nancy Landon Kassebaum Baker), whom Brisbane states "She may be the first woman President."

Scrapbook leaf with TLS by Governor Alf M. Landon and TLS by Robert M. Owthwaite (president of the Topeka Chamber of Commerce); Letters are glue to leaf, along with several small newspaper clippings, and both show small edge tears not affecting type or signatures; Landon letter reads: "...Dear Art: Your note of November 4th which I just found in the accumulated mail touches me very deeply. I have received many beautiful letters from all over the country, but none more so than yours. It is one that I shall always keep. Thank you for your gracious and happy expressions. / I have had a experience that comes to few men and the net of it is all to the good. One of the net gains from the last four years has been our better acquaintance and I hope it will not be interrupted. / With kindest personal regards, I am Your friend, Alf M Landon / Governor."; The Owthwaite letter reads: "Mr. A. J. Carruth, Jr... My dear Sir: / I should like to have you serve as a member of the Chamber of Commerce Committee which will make plans for the Inauguration of Governor-elect Huxman. / The first meeting of this Committee is being called for Tuesday, December 15th..."

Typed note on the Executive Mansion letterhead, shortly following Landons massive defeat by Roosevelt in the 1936 presidential election; Note reads: Dear Art: / May I express our very great / appreciation for your kind words / in the 'Whispering Willow' column / last Saturday evening? / Our friends have been most / loyal throughout the past few / months, and it has been a great / source of courage and comfort to / us to know of their loyalty. / We expect to live a more normal life now and have more time / for our friends. I hope that will / mean we will see more of the Carruth / family..."; Folded four page note, though with content only on front, first page; Note has been removed from a scrapbook, with some residual seen on verso of second leaf and not affecting content at all; Content page remains bright and with good type and signature.

Although reported by Graff as being first published in 1928, there is indication that the author printed a few copies in 1920 after completing his writing. 178 pages. Top edge gilded. All first printing points (Graff 2720). Dark green cloth covers, with gilt lettering and ruled lines. Frontispiece between ii and iii. Includes excerpt from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat on pages 174-177. From the library of former Kansas governor and 1936 presidential candidate, Alf Landon, with his later book plate on blank front end page. Light rubbing on spine, partially affecting gilt lines at foot and head. Very light rubbing on cloth at spine ends and corners. Plate following page 174 is detached, though in place along with its tissue guard. Volume remains otherwise tight and very clean. Nice example of this rare first edition, containing material on an overland trip to California and eventual return by way of Panama, the California Gold Rush, and the Civil War.

Contents remain tight and very clean, and inscription is bright and clear.
