Green cloth covers with gilt lettering and cover illustrations. Covers are a little rubbed, though lettering and illustrations remain fairly bright. Significant moisture stains affecting frontispiece and title page of volume one, and scattered throughout volumes. There is no sticking or loss of paper due to this. Both volumes remain tight and otherwise clean and intact.

Collated and complete with all color plates and folding maps. Some older moisture stains on edges affecting some plates. Leaves of volumes I, III, and V remain unopened. Hinges of all volumes have been professionally reinforced. Occasional small tears and other stains. Maps are all in very good condition. Overall tight and fairly clean copies. Photos available upon request to better illustrate condition. Five volume set will require additional postage charges for priority and/or international mail.

487 pages indexed, plus folding colored frontispiece; nine un-numbered plates in main text of which one is color; and 50 natural history plates after J. Smit, G. H. Ford, and A. G. Butler. These include 21 bird plates after Smit and four butterfly plates after Butler. The remaining plates are after Ford, and include four reptile plates (uncolored), ten fish plates (five are uncolored), seven shell plates and three insect plates. Of the natural history plates, all but nine of Ford's reptile plates are hand colored. Folding map at rear, preceding index. All plates except the frontispiece remain tissue guarded. Green cloth over beveled boards with gilt lettering and decoration. Rebacked, retaining most of cloth spine covers. Cloth is rubbed, and shows some wear at corners. Top hinge is cracked and a little loose. First few leaves with foxing, affecting some of the folding frontis plate, and title page at gutter. Front free end leaf and half title page show chips along upper edge, and ffep with previous penciled dealer notes. Plates are generally very good, but are a little darkened along edges. Tissue guards are a bit tattered.

Vol. III in Captain William Dampier's adventure series stands alone, though a continuation of this work was published six years later. This is a particularly lovely, sound, and complete copy of the scarce first edition. Later full calf binding in contemporary style. Covers show very light rubbing, mostly on lower edges. Map is bright and crisp with strong water mark. Two older inked names are seen at the top of the title page, one dated 1877. Mostly light foxing, though a little heavier on the first six leaves. Otherwise, contents remain crisp and clean.

Small clipping affixed to top edge of title page announcing a visit by the author and his wife to his parents in Cambridge. Map shows a little mis-folding and there is a three inch closed tear into map image on bound edge. Volume remains tight and otherwise intact.

First published by Cambridge University Press in 1888, various editions followed with the first introduction by T. E. Lawrence seen in 1921. This 2013 Folio Society reprint is from the 1936 "New and Definitive" edition published by Jonathan Cape in London. "This edition of Travels in Arabia Deserta was typeset at the Folio Society in Miller Type. The text was printed on Abbey Wove and the Duotones on Profisilk at Memminger Mediencentrum Ag, Memmingen, Germany. The Books are half-bound in Indian Goat-skin by Lachenmaier, Reutlingen, Germany, with marbled paper sides by Jemma Lewis. The map is mounted in panels on Atlantic Cloth and case-bound in Arbelave Library Buckram." This pristine and lovely set was unpacked and placed on the shelf. It has never been read or thumbed through, and the map has never been unfolded. Due to size and weight, additional charges will apply for Priority and/or International shipping.

Frontis map in Volume One shows an eight inch closed tear with older archival taped repair. Scattered, mostly light, foxing throughout that is a little heavier on first few leaves and affecting the frontis maps of both volumes. Otherwise intact.
