Slightly raised spine bands, with gilt lettering on leather spine labels, and stamped leaf motif in remaining four compartments. All edges are gilded. Covers are scuffed and rubbed, and show a little light wear. Blank front free end leaf of Volume I shows old penciled prices and seller's notes. All three volumes remains tight and otherwise clean.

Leather continues onto edges of inside covers where it is also tooled and frames a red leather cover to inside boards. Recto side of ends leaves are satin covered. Book mark is sewn in. Spine has faded to more of a brown. Scattered light foxing/offsetting. A very beautiful copy despite fairly minor faults.

The mid 20th century book plate of Holcomb Genung is affixed to the front free end leaf of the first volume. Paper spine labels with some chips, but remaining good. Joints and hinges of Vol. I are cracked and top cover is loosened though still attached. There is also a tear in the front free end page where book plate has been pulled. Otherwise, volumes show light wear consistent with age, though are generally intact and remaining tight.

There is a little light foxing on the first few leaves, and the tissue guard over the frontispiece has a two inch closed tear. Volume remains tight, clean, and intact.

Early reprint of this immensely popular geography first published in 1544. Hand colored woodblock map measuring approx. 15 x 12 inches (approx. 38 x 30 cm) with good margins, and title printed in upper margin. North is oriented to the bottom of the map. The region shown ranges from the Baltic and North Seas on the north, to Austria and Croatia on the South. Bohemia is seen at the heart of the map, enclosed by a forest of trees with Praga (Prague) and Dachaw (Dachau) enclosed. To the west is the Burgundy region of France, and to the east the western edge of Poland. The bow of a Nordic boat is seen in the North Sea, powered by oarsmen. Numerous place names, forests, mountains, and rivers. Strong impression with good contemporary coloring. There are a couple of pin holes, and a small hole just above the title in the margin has previously been professionally repaired. Very slight handling and very slight smudges at edges of margins. A previous sellers penciled notes remain in the lower blank corner of the maps verso. Sebastian Münster (1488 - 1552) was a German cartographer and cosmographer. His first geographic works were "Germania Descriptio" (1530) and "Mappa Europae" (1536), and in 1540 a Latin edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. His Cosmographia was first published in 1844, and being one of the most popular books of the 16th century, went through at least 24 editions, over the following 100 years.
