Early small quarto set with Parts I, II, & III being published by Lippincott, Grambo & Company in 1853, and Parts IV & V published by J. B. Lippincott & Company in 1856. Of this edition, there were only five volumes published. Part I contains 568 pages, plus 76 plates; Part II contains 608 pages, plus 80 plates; Part II contains 635 pages, plus 45 plates; Part IV contains 668 pages, plus 42 plates; 712 pages, plus 36 plates. LACKING plate 6, "Sacrifice of a Female Captive by the Pawnees in 1838" and plate 29, "Map of the Creek Country in 1790," of Part V. Both plates, called for in the index, do not appear to have ever been bound in to this volume. Each volume has been collated, and is otherwise complete. Laid in at the front of Part I is a clipped inscription reading "Chas. Stokes, Esq, / With respect of / H R Schoolcraft." A letter from M. W. Stirling, Director of the BAE is tipped to the rear end leaf of Part I, addressing an eventual index to the Schoolcraft set. Publishers uniform half leather with marbled paper over boards, and marbled end leaves. Lightly raised spine band and gilt spine lettering. Half title page of Part I shows two different inked ownership names/dates that have bled through and slightly affect the upper portion of the first title page. Ink stamped name/address on end leaves of all volumes. Other penciled bookseller notations on blank front free end leaf of Part I. There is just a little scattered penciled marginalia and underlining. Age toning affecting some leaves and plates, and occasional light foxing, etc. All five parts remain tight, and are generally very clean. This is a nice and complete set of the "economy" edition which measures approx. 7 1/2 x 10 1/2 inches. Due to size and weight, additional fees may apply for Priority and/or International shipping.
