Hand colored woodblock map measuring approx. 15 x 12 inches (approx. 38 x 30 cm) with good margins, and title printed in upper margin. North is oriented to the bottom of the map. The region shown ranges from the Baltic and North Seas on the north, to Austria and Croatia on the South. Bohemia is seen at the heart of the map, enclosed by a forest of trees with Praga (Prague) and Dachaw (Dachau) enclosed. To the west is the Burgundy region of France, and to the east the western edge of Poland. The bow of a Nordic boat is seen in the North Sea, powered by oarsmen. Numerous place names, forests, mountains, and rivers. Strong impression with good contemporary coloring. There are a couple of pin holes, and a small hole just above the title in the margin has previously been professionally repaired. Very slight handling and very slight smudges at edges of margins. A previous sellers penciled notes remain in the lower blank corner of the maps verso. Sebastian Münster (1488 - 1552) was a German cartographer and cosmographer. His first geographic works were "Germania Descriptio" (1530) and "Mappa Europae" (1536), and in 1540 a Latin edition of Ptolemy's Geographia. His Cosmographia was first published in 1844, and being one of the most popular books of the 16th century, went through at least 24 editions, over the following 100 years.
